About Doe Boyle

A native of the Connecticut shoreline, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have sand between my toes and a book in my hands. As a child, I satisfied my curiosity for the natural world by spending long days exploring the woods, shore, and fields near my home. I took summer classes at my local Audubon sanctuary, and I watched every National Geographic and Jacques Cousteau documentary I could find. Not so surprisingly then, as an adult, I have turned toward the beauty and poetry of the natural world for inspiration.

Most recently, in October 2022, I celebrated the publication of Water, my third book in Albert Whitman's Imagine This! series. That series launched in September 2020 with the publication of my poetic picture books Heartbeat and Blink! and two titles by author Aimée Bissonette. In March 2021, Albert Whitman & Company released Hear the Wind Blow, my exploration of the rising and falling of a storm, which was named a notable book of the year by the Chicago Public Library and the Bank Street College of Education.

I am also the author of eleven picture books published in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution and the National Wildlife Federation. Two of these award-winning titles are Otter on His Own: The Story of a Sea Otter and Coral Reef Hideaway: The Story of a Clown Anemonefish. Among my earlier picture books are Summer Coat, Winter Coat: The Story of a Snowshoe HareGray Wolf Pup, and Earth Day Every Day. I am also the author of two travel guides, Fun with the Family/Connecticut and Guide to the Connecticut Shore.

A master teaching artist selected by the Connecticut Office of the Arts and featured on the artist roster of Arts for Learning/CT, I often share my love of reading and writing in residencies with schoolchildren. I am well versed in arts integration, multiple intelligences, democratic practice, and inquiry-based and kinesthetic learning, and I am certified in HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Approach pedagogy and practice. The National Core Arts Standards (NCAS), the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) are the cornerstones of my work as a teaching artist. In association with the CT Center for Nonviolence, I am also a certified arts trainer in the Six Principles of Kingian Nonviolence.

In association with the Natural Science Illustration programs at Yale/Peabody Museum, I have served as a guest instructor in courses on botanical illustration and nature writing for the children's book marketplace, in collaboration with illustrator Linda Miller and children's book author and illustrator Brenna Burns Yu. In 2023 I received a fellowship for artistic excellence in literary arts from the Connecticut Office of the Arts. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and its financial support, which will fund further research on two upcoming works for young readers.

Beyond writing for children, I have also enjoyed a long career as a developmental editor of adult nonfiction, with specialties in travel, outdoor recreation, cooking, gardening, folklore, and natural and cultural history.

I am one of eight founders of the Tassy Walden Award for New Voices in Children’s Literature, a statewide competition for pre-published Connecticut writers and illustrators of children’s books. The other founders are the remarkable women who, many years ago, formed not only a critique group but also a sisterhood of the heart.

Never far from the sounds of music, poetry, and the sea, I share an ancient house at the side of an ancient road with my husband and a wee cluster of speckled hens. I adore my four daughters, their beloveds, and six astonishing grandchildren.
