Heartbeat

About the Book

Flick-dash flick-dash! Lub-dub. Lub-dub. Lub-dub. From tiny meadow mice to tall giraffes to the octopus with three hearts, each animal's heart has its own beat, in tune with its body’s needs. Strong graphic art and rhythmic text packed with interesting facts capture imaginations.

Praise for Heartbeat

“Using a combination of poetic language and supplemental prose paragraphs, the author relates facts about hearts and heartbeats of a dozen different animals—including human beings. Bold, bright, full-color art accompanies each double-page spread…Each animal’s spread is worth a good deal of attention, both for the information itself and for the use of different kinds of poetic devices. There is humor, too; no one should miss the funny rhymes about the “relaxed” camel and its “untaxed” heart…Heartily inspiring. ”

Kirkus Reviews

“I love the inspiration for this story–the author was sitting on her back porch when she admired a hummingbird hovering over a blossom... Each animal is given a two-page spread that initially focuses on their interesting heartbeat or even cardiovascular system …with lots of fun words such as “lub dub”, “flit flit”, and “flick dash”.  The illustrations provided by Daniel Long really make this book “pop”…Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries, anyone who works with children over the age of four years old. I would highly recommend this book for an elementary school classroom.”

“The book’s accessibility, clever and unusual focus, range of animals included—giraffes, gorillas, octopuses, and more—and attractive, realistic images make it a winner. Informative back matter and a diagram of a human heart round out this STEM-focused picture book.”
